The General Studies Program offers a Bachelor of General Studies degree. It was established during the 2002-2003 year. The Program is designed especially to provide students with an enhanced comprehensive broad-based liberal education with the flexibility to adapt and combine courses from established traditional curricula.
The Program adds depth and new dimensions to existing programs as well as enables Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) to continue pursuing its mission of serving the educational needs of both students and the community.
The goals of the General Studies Program are to:
- Provide a flexible course of study that will establish an interdisciplinary approach to the development of students.
2. Develop an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the social, political, cultural and economic forces which shape communities at the local, state, national and international levels.
REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
Completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours consisting of the general education core, an area of concentration, a minor,
and electives. Of the required 120 credit hours, 45 must be at the 300/400 level (15 of the 45 must be at the 400 level).
Note: In selecting an area of concentration, students may choose from the social sciences, business, natural sciences, or humanities. (Under certain circumstances, a student may design a concentration in an area of interest that must be approved by the Director of the General Studies Program and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.) A minimum grade of AC@ is required in all courses in the concentration and minor areas, unless otherwise specified by the respective department.
Completion of all University requirements as stated in the catalog.
Completion of a minimum of 12 credit hours while enrolled in the General Studies Program.
Students may elect for Concentrations in any of the areas of English, Fine Arts, History, and African-American Studies in the General Studies program.
Concentration in English
Students who elect for a concentration in English in the General Studies program must complete thirty semester hours in the area beyond English 111 and 112. The following English course content will satisfy the requirements for the English concentration in General Studies.

Concentration in Art
Students who elect for a concentration in Art in the General Studies program must complete thirty semester hours in Art. The following Art course content will satisfy the requirements for the Art concentration in General Studies.

Students may elect for a History concentration in the General Studies program. To satisfy the requirement of a History concentration, students must take thirty semester hours in the area. The following History course content will satisfy the requirements for the History concentration in General Studies.

Concentration in African-American Studies
Students may elect for an African-American Studies concentration in the General Studies program. To satisfy this requirement, students must complete thirty semester hours in the area. The following African-American Studies course content will satisfy the requirements for the African-American Studies concentration in General Studies.
