Print Journalism majors receive a strong foundation in the theory, history, and ethics of mass communication in order to produce the well-rounded journalist capable of performing optimally in media-related careers. While the emphasis is on Print Journalism, the Department of English and Print Journalism has a cooperative agreement with the College of Liberal Arts at the University of New Orleans allowing the majors at SUNO an opportunity to minor in Communications at UNO. Majors participate in local and national internships in public relations, on newspapers and magazines, and in radio and television.
A major in Print Journalism consists of a minimum of thirty-nine semester hours, of which twenty-seven semester hours consist of required courses. Twelve credit hours must be chosen from Print Journalism courses as electives. The required courses are distributed as follows: Journalism 241; 242; 320; 340; 360; 365; 420; 440; and 450.
A minor in Print Journalism consists of a minimum of eighteen credit hours. The required courses are: Journalism 241; 242; 320; 340; 420; and 450.

JOUR 241. INTRODUCTION TO MASS MEDIA 3 credit hours
An introduction to the history, forms, and operations of mass media.
JOUR 242. INTRODUCTION TO JOURNALISM AND REPORTING 3 credit hours
An introduction to the practice of journalism, including the skills and methods essential to accurate and informed news reporting and writing.
JOUR 270. COMMUNICATIONS GRAPHICS 3 credit hours
An introduction to the history of printing, typographic developments, and the concepts and practices of communicating through informational graphics, design and layout.
JOUR 320. NEWSWRITING 3 credit hours
This course is intended to acquaint students with the key aspects of writing news stories. (Perquisite: Journalism 242)
JOUR 340. LAW AND THE PRESS 3 credit hours
An introduction to the issues related to freedom of the press, censorship, and the various legislative controls of the mass media in the United States.

A specialized study of the process of reporting and writing stories about sports events and personalities.
JOUR 360. MAGAZINE ARTICLE WRITING 3 credit hours
This course provides for the study and writing of various types of feature stories, including magazine articles and newspaper features.
JOUR 365. BROADCAST NEWS WRITING 3 credit hours
This course focuses on the key elements of writing for radio and television, with an emphasis on the relationship between print and broadcast news writing.
JOUR 370. PUBLIC RELATIONS PRINCIPLES AND METHODS 3 credit hours
This course introduces students to the theory and practice of Public Relations as a management function necessary to influencing the attitude and behavior of internal and external public’s crucial to the operation of any organization.

An introduction to the principles and methods used in the promotion of various products in a mass communication environment.

This course is a comprehensive study of editing news stories, newspaper makeup, and the technological developments in the production and distribution of new stories. (Prerequisite: Journalism 320)
JOUR 440. JOURNALISM LABORATORY 3 credit hours
This course is an internship for academic credit with a local media organization, or experience on the campus newspaper, including reporting, editing and electronic technology.
JOUR 450. ADVANCED NEWSWRITING 3 credit hours
This is a comprehensive, in-depth study of all aspects of news writing, with emphasis upon practical applications in the writing itself.
