ALTERNATE CERTIFICATION TEACHER CENTER FOR URBAN EDUCATION
Dr. Louise S. Kaltenbaugh

The College of Education and Human Development at Southern University at New Orleans has developed a comprehensive alternative teacher certification program to address the tremendous teacher shortages in our state. The purpose of the Alternative Certification Teacher Center for Urban Education (ACTCUE) is to provide the framework for the preparation and certification of teachers for urban schools, to provide in-service teachers with opportunities for professional improvement and growth, and to serve as a catalyst for the rapidly changing reform developments in the teachers’ preparation curriculum.

The primary mission of the ACTCUE is to prepare individuals who have earned a baccalaureate degree in a field outside the realm of education to serve as highly qualified professional educators primarily in the urban setting.  It provides opportunities for persons from various educational backgrounds, former teachers who want to upgrade their credentials and returning candidates who trained to teach but never received a certificate, to become “highly qualified” certified schoolteachers.
