SGA, Miss SUNO's Royal Court welcome new blood

September 13, 2010

The Southern University at New Orleans Student Government Association and Miss SUNO's Royal Court have welcomed new faces after elections were held on September 10th.

The SGA had elections for class presidents and senators. Lyndritha H. Armstrong is now the Freshman Class President, and Sean I. Johnson, Jr. grabbed the Senior Class President victory. Because there were no candidates for the offices of president for either the sophomore or junior classes, representatives will be appointed by the Student Government Association.

Senators were also elected for freshmen, sophomores, and seniors. Natalie Journee claimed the victory for the Freshman Class Senator seat, LaTasha E. Manuel is now the Sophomore Class Senator, and Yolanda A. Guillory now has the title of Senior Class Senator. Like the class president positions which saw no candidates, the Junior Class Senator position will also be appointed by the SGA.

Miss SUNO's Royal Court has new faces. Jasmine Perry will now serve as Miss Freshman while CalBriell R. Williams will reign as Miss Junior, and Marisa Mitchell is now SUNO's Miss Senior. The Royal Court will appoint a Miss Sophomore, because there were no contestants for the role.

In a development that surprised few people, SUNO students voted to resume the University's yearbook in a low voter turnout. One hundred, forty-nine (149) students voted for the move and two voted against it.

August 31, 2010

The SUNO Communication Club was accepted to present a panel entitled “'Who Dat?' for the People: Heroes Communicating Through Hardship” at the Louisiana Communication Association’s annual conference on September 25th at Delgado Community College. Presenters include Langston Terrel, Sa’Id Jordan, Evangelyn Webster, and Quintin Garrus along with Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, who will serve as a panelist at another LCA event. The students wrote their proposal over the summer.

This is the second year the SUNO Communication Club undergraduates have been accepted to present at LCA. The Club will also participate in the NO/AIDS Walk on September 12th at Audubon Park for the second year. Last year the club raised over $300 in the fight against AIDS in our community. The SUNO Communication Club is a charter student club of the National Communication Association, and is advised by Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason.

The SUNO Communication Club exists as a National Communication Association student group, which is dedicated to the exploration of communication in our personal and professional lives. Members participate locally and under the national chapter to examine theory and practice to better their communication abilities.
