Miss SUNO 2010-2011

Miss SUNO, Idania Marisel Suazo, is the proud and only daughter of Mr. Natividad Suazo and Mrs. Josefina Suazo.  She is a senior majoring in Substance Abuse counseling with a minor in Psychology.  Idania was born in Honduras, Tegucigalpa and her native language is Spanish.  She belongs to the Garifuna culture.  Idania moved to the United States at the age of fifteen years old and attended Warren Easton High School where she was a member of the soccer team.  Not knowing very much English, Idania made a commitment to herself to learn at least one word each day.

After graduating high school, Idania felt that she needed to learn more English before attending a four-year university.  She enrolled in Delgado Community College where she successfully completed the English as Second Language program.  She always had the desire to help other people who struggle with the English language like she did.  Miss Suazo found a job with Healthy Start New Orleans as a Spanish Translator/Outreach worker, where she provided assistance to many mothers.

In the spring of 2010, Idania enrolled in Southern University at New Orleans where she immediately became active on campus by helping different organizations in every way she could.  Miss SUNO’s involvement on campus includes being a member of Students for the Prevention and Education of Substance Abuse (S.P.E.S.A.) where she currently serves as Vice President and served as Miss S.P.E.S.A. sweetheart for 2010-2011, National Pan-Hellenic Council where she currently serves as Vice President, the Communications Club and Psi Chi Honor Society.  Miss SUNO is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Theta Chapter.

In May 2012, Idania plans to receive her undergraduate degree in Substance Abuse Counseling and Psychology, but she won’t stop there.  Immediately after graduation, she plans to reenroll here at SUNO in the Masters of Social Work Program.  Miss SUNO’s future plans include receiving a doctorate degree and becoming the owner and operator of her own rehabilitation center for newly released detoxification patients.
