Ramirez's work to be displayed at JW Marriott in an evening of "cultural indulgences" July 26, 2010
Cynthia Ramirez, Associate Professor of Fine Arts and multi-media artist, will exhibit her work at the JW Marriott on Wednesday, July 28th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Ms. Ramirez will display monoprints and paintings with live entertainment by guitarist Javier Gutierrez in the lobby bar. This is her second time displaying her work at the luxurious hotel.
Ramirez says that her pieces incorporate the legendary Thirteen Crystal Skulls using Day of the Dead pieces with Hubble Telescope deep space imagery on canvas.
Ms. Ramirez has exhibited her work internationally, particularly her Day of the Dead exhibit. Her Day of the Dead alter was exhibited at the 2010 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ms. Ramirez's altars have also been viewed at the Cabildo in New Orleans in association with the Louisiana State Museum.
Amedee elected chairman of the City Planning Commission July 20, 2010
Dr. George Amedee was been elected chairman of New Orleans' City Planning Commission in a 4-3 decision on July 13th. A professor of Political Science, he will serve in the position until 2011.
Omojola to hold GEMS summer camp May 18, 2010
Dr. Joe Omojola, Professor of Physics, will be holding his annual two-week Gateway to Excellence in Mathematics and Science Camp (GEMS CAMP) for students completing 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades starting on June 7, 2010. The camp, which will be held in two sessions, is intended to increase elementary school students' interest in math and science.
There will be two sessions for the camp from June 7th to 18th and from July 5th to 16th. Students can choose to participate in one of two sessions by contacting the University or registering on the SUNO Enhancement, Enrichment and Excellence in Mathematics and Science (E3MaS) web site. There will also be sessions for high school students from June 14th to July 9th as well as math and science high school teachers from July 12th to July 23rd.
The camp will engage in hands-on math and science activities throughout the day, and all materials and lunch will be provided free of charge.
Application packets (consisting of the application form and transcript) must be received by 5:00 PM on May 24, 2010 in Brown Hall (the Old Science building) room 204. Materials could also be faxed in to (504) 284–5475. Applications without a transcript/report card will not be considered.

Pierce to play Jazz Fest, appear in "Treme" April 22, 2010 Michael Pierce, Assistant Professor of Music, will make two significant April appearances. Mr. Pierce, an accomplished musician, will play at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with the legendary "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin on Friday, April 23rd. He will play saxophone as a member of Franklin's band at 5:35 p.m. on the Acura stage.
Mr. Pierce will also make an appearance in an episode of the HBO hit series "Treme".
