Omojola receives award from National Science Foundation

Dr. Joe Omojola received the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from the National Science Foundation. He received the award in Washington, DC from President George W. Bush on Friday, November 16, 2007. Dr. Omojola is a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at SUNO, and had previously served as the Dean of the College of Science and the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physics.

 

Dr. Omojola is the Campus Coordinator for SUNO's Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation, the director of SUNO's component of the Graduate Alliance for Education in Louisiana, and a manager for the Program for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Computer Technology. Among these programs, over half a million dollars per year in grants funding reaches SUNO.

 

Dr. Omojola has been able to foster effective collaborations with public school teachers from New Orleans Public Schools and faculty members from other institutions through grants and other related activities. The broader impact of Dr. Omojola’s work is seen in the number of his students being drawn into mentoring and teaching. In 2006, he was awarded the National Role Model Award for his dedication and commitment to the education of minority and women and also for increasing their opportunities in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics workforce.
